The International Genealogical
Index, created by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, contains
approximately 600 million individual names and other details and includes
information copied from many British baptism and marriage records. An
addendum to the IGI contains an additional 125 million records and The
Ancestoral File database contains appoximately 35.6 million names that
are linked into family trees.
The IGI may be consulted
on microfiche in Family
History Centres, many County Record Offices and some public libraries.
Additionally, the information is available on computer at most Family
History Centres and may be accessed on the net via the FamilySearch
website which permits free searches of this vast data resource. Some
caution should, however be exercised when using the IGI - transcription
errors are when dealing with data on such a huge scale and it is absolutely
vital that all occurrences are checked against the original data source.
