Archives

  • Direct.gov.  For births, marriages, deaths, adoptions and civil partnerships.
  • The National Archives. For census returns, wills, military records and other material.
  • FamilyRecords.gov.uk. - has unfortunately now closed but an archived version can be found at the UK Government Web Archive.
  • PRO In Depth Research Guides . These in-depth research guides are intended to provide detailed information on how to find and understand records relating to particular subjects. They cover a wide range of topics, reflecting The National Archives’ extensive collection.
  • ARCHON.  The ARCHON Directory includes contact details for record repositories in the United Kingdom and also for institutions elsewhere in the world which have substantial collections of manuscripts noted under the indexes to the National Register of Archives.
  • The Archives Hub - enables you to search across a wealth of archive material held in nearly 200 UK institutions.
  • The Society of Genealogists.  Home to the country's most important (?) private collection of genealogical information.

On-Line Resources

Parish Records

  • Family Search - the on-line database of the Church of Latter Day Saints comprising mainly of parish birth and marriage records and the UK 1881 Census.
  • FreeREG - is a volunteer project that aims to provide free internet searches of baptism, marriage and burial records transcribed from parish records. Search facilities are now active, but not a great deal of data available yet.

Census

  • Genuki - has a searchable database of places in the 1891 census that gives the county, registration district and sub-district, PRO piece number and LDS film number for any place in England, Wales or the Isle of Man.
  • Census Content. This section of the Gendocs site shows exactly what information was recorded for each census from 1841 - 1901.
  • FreeCEN.  Aims to provide a similar service to FreeBMD (see below) - but for 1841-1891 census material. A pilot scheme for the 1891 census will start with Devon and Cornwall.

Civil Registration

  • Free BMD - birth, marriage and death information extracted from GRO registration indexes and contributed to the site by fellow researchers - an invaluable resource.
  • Cheshire BMD.  A similar, but smaller, project to make the indexes to civil registration records for the county of Cheshire accessible on-line.
  • Yorkshire BMD. Even more recent project for Yorkshire but with steadily growing content.

Maps and Gazetteers

  • Googlemaps and Bing provide contemporary street maps and search facilities for most UK towns and cities. Googlemaps also provides access to Street View, which lets you explore places around the world through 360-degree street-level imagery.
  • Old Maps.  A downloadable (but not free )collection of 19th and 20th Century Ordnance Survey (OS) Maps for England, Wales and Scotland.
  • Ordnance Survey.  The OS 'Get-a-map' facility allows you to call up a map centred on a particular place or click on a point then zoom in/out as required.
  • Genmaps.  An extensive collection of historical maps and links to many others, organised by county.
  • Finding Old UK Maps On-Line .   A useful source of information about how to set about finding the maps you need for your family history research..
  • Gazeteer of British Place Names.  maintained by the Association of British Counties.
  • The Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names - covers the whole world!
  • The Genuki Gazetteer. Tells you the county and OS grid reference of a place as well as providing a list of other towns and villages within whatever distance you specify.
  • The Genuki Parish Locator. Lists churches and the relevant register offices.

Utilities

  • Babel Fish .  Type in one language and it's automatically translated to another. Clever eh?
  • Online Soundex Calculator .   Type in the name, get the Soundex Code.
  • Chapman Codes.   Full list of the Chapman three letter abbreviations used to indicate counties and countries.
  • Parish Locator.   A particularly useful freeware utility that gives the location of some 15,000 UK parishes and will calculate the distance and bearing between any two.

  • Family History and Genealogy Societies – England - yet another useful Genuki page.
  • The Society of Genealogists. The premier society for those with an interest in researching family history in the United Kingdom.
  • FFHS.  The Federation of Family History Societies.
  • AGRA.  The Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives is the professional body for genealogical researchers.
  • GOONS.  The Guild of One Name Studies. A one-name study is a project researching facts about a surname and all the people who have held it, as opposed to a particular pedigree (the ancestors of one person) or descendancy (the descendants of one person or couple).
